A look back at Global Awareness 2015

It's been quite a journey.  Classes worked hard to make an impact on GLPS and the world by raising awareness about a topic that mattered to them.  We thank you and congratulate you for all of your hard work.  We hope you will continue to be the leaders of tomorrow making changes today!

Say it with a T-shirt!

In week 3, classes designed a T-shirt to wear for their final performance and the results were fantastic.  The T-shirt is a lasting memory of the campaign and the changes you are trying to make! Wear it proudly.

Class 20 Presents Animals are NOT Fashion

Class 20 presented their campaign Animals are NOT Fashion by having a fashion show that gets crashed by protesters and animal activists.  Here is their script:

Script:

MC (Cindy)- Welcome to class 20’s campaign ladies and gentlemen.  My name is Garam Lee.  Our campaign is “Animals are not Fashion”.  We chose this campaign because every year animals are being used for fashion.  For example, alligator skin is used for bags and fox furs are used for winter jackets.  So we are persuading you to realize that “Animals are NOT Fashion”.  Tonight, from the runways of Paris is our new winter line of clothes.  Are you ready for the Fashion Show?

(Isabella plays music)

First, is Sam.  He is wearing an Ostrich feather hat.  Next is Angelina.  She is modeling a sheep fur vest and a crocodile clutch.  Here come Hyo-Jae wearing a leopard shirt.  This year’s hottest item.  Last is Jun. Jun is wearing a lion hat and white leather jacket.

Models walk out one by one- Sam, Angelina, Hyo Jae, Jun

Crasher (Jun)- Stop Animals are Not for Fashion.  How would you feel if you were killed like those animals? So stop using animals for fashion.  Animals are not fashion, they are PETS!!

Protesters (Yeon Woo, Erin, Leona, Chris)- Chanting loudly:

Animals are not fashion!

Save our animals!

Use plastic instead of crocodile!

Use Cotton instead of fur.

Don’t you feel bad for the animals?

No more animals for fashion!

Isabella- The animal activists are here! Let’s hear from them.

Activists- Joon Seok, Sean, Yu Jeong, Seo-Young

Joon-Seok- Hello ladies and gentlemen, we are animal activists.  My name is Joon Seok and we are here to explain why we should not use animals for fashion. We will tell you about a company that uses animals for fashion products, also we will explain how animals are treated and finally we will discuss alternatives and an organization called PETA.

Sean- Many companies use animal products.  The most expensive and famous representative company is Hermes.  They usually use crocodiles to make their products like handbags.  But, crocodiles are endangered animals.  Hermes uses 2000 baby crocodiles over a 2 year period. The crocodiles skin is ripped off and they are sent to tanneries.  Next time before you buy animal products, please think!

Yu-Jeong- Do you wear down jackets? Or do you have a leather watch? Do you know how they are made? For down jackets goose and rabbit are used. People remove their fur by skinning them and this is painful.  Then their feather are put into jackets.  When crocodiles are used for their skins, they are shot in the head with a bolt gun and their necks are sawed opened.  This is done while the crocodile is still conscious.  You shouldn’t use animals for fashion!

Seo-Young- Animals are treated badly because of fashion companies which use animals.  However, we could use alternatives instead of animals’ leather and fur.  Have you heard orange is the new black? Well, synthetic plastic is the new leather.  Faux fur is the new animal fur.  If you think about how animals are treated we hope you will choose not to use them for fashion.  If you want to know more, please check out PETA an organization for the protection of animals.

Please remember animals are not fashion!

MC Closing Isabella- Thank you activists.  My name is Ji Hyeon and I’m the closing MC.  Through our show we tried to tell everyone that animals are not for fashion.  Our fashion show crasher hid amoung the models and stopped the fashion show, our activists explained the reason why people should stop using animals for fashion.  We mentioned about the company Hermes mainly using crocodile skin, the treatment of animals and PETA for protection of animals.  I hope you guys enjoyed our show and understood our campaign. Thank you!

Whole class: Animals are not for Fashion!

Class 21 Presents Empty Playgrounds

Class 21 created a performance to share their campaign with GLPS.  It starts with a funeral to mourn the death of childhood and then it changes to a celebration with a Wall of Wishes and the rebirth of childhood.  Here is their script:

Script:

MC Opening Lucy:  (standing on stage right or center)

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. I am Moon Jung Hyeon.  We are class 21 and we are going to present our performance, Empty Playgrounds.  We chose this topic because we wanted to show how Koreans childhoods are disappearing.  Our slogan is “Why so serious?” because Korean parents and students take the students future so serious that they give up their childhood. We wanted to change that and make them take the students’ future more lively.  Now let the performance begin.

Obituary 1 (Grace): On November 5, 1997, a childhood died.  The cause of death was parent’s decision; they decided to make a child work hard whether they wanted it or not.  They stole their future and the childhood died as a result of not being used.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 3am during children’s sleeping time.

Obituary 2 (Sarah)- On August 5th, 2001 children’s sleeping time died.  The cause of its death was too much homework.  Hagwon’s and academies overloaded the sleep time with extra work and so sleep died.  A funeral service for sleep will be held on Aug 10, 2001 at midnight, after the hagwons close.

Obituary 3 (Kevin) – On January 1, 2005 free time died.  The cause of death is still unknown.  It could have been caused by homework, stress, school or many other things.  We will gather to mourn the death of free time next year during Chuseok when we might have time. Please wait patiently until then.

Obituary 4 (Belle)- On July 26, 2015 Mr. Childhood died! The cause of death was a lot of homework and academies.  Mr. Childhood was very happy before he met academies and homework.  But after meeting them he quickly got weaker and weaker until he died. His funeral will be held on July 28, 2015.

Eulogy (Hae Rin & EunSeh)- Hello ladies and gentlemen, my name is Hae Rin Jung and this is Eun she Park.  Today we had a funeral for childhood.  I’m here to talk about how childhood was when it was alive.  Childhood had an unhappy, short life.  It didn’t try to participate in anything.  Childhood only studied.  It just took lessons forced by its parents.  The parents were full of educational enthusiasm and they were eager to make childhood study hard.

Eun-Seh- Time flew.  All spent for studying.  Childhood died and it didn’t have any memories of playing in the playground with its friends.  Only regrets! After the death of childhood people just kept on worrying about lessons and its friends studying and homework.  Childhood never had freedom and then it died.  It was a Prisoners of Education, a POE.  The playground was always empty.

Hae-Rin- We are here to remember and childhoods’ every alive moment and mourn its tragic death.  We should not forget the time when childhood was alive. Thank you, we will miss you!

Closing MC Funeral (Betsy)- (center stage, microphone)- This is the end of the funeral for childhood’s death.  We just watched the mournings of POE’s, Prisoners of Education, and how they were attacked by education, schools, academies and homework without having any free time or time to rest. Because we would like to make a change in childhood’s life we now will share with you what we wish to do if we had free time for 1 day without any school.  Thank you for attending today’s funeral performance.

Opening MC Rebirth Rachel (center Stage microphone)- Good evening ladies and gentlemen, my name is Hye Rim.  We just saw the death of our childhood and now we are going to show you a project called Wall of Wishes.  The purpose of this project was to look for what the students do when they have free time.  From the survey, we know that students want more free time and want to live happier lives.  The first thing students said they want to do if there was no school was eat.  There were lots of people who mentioned eating.  In addition, they wanted to play soccer, basketball, cell phone games and use the computer.   Lastly, they really wanted more sleep because due to homework they don’t get enough. Now let’s take a look at the Wall of Wishes.

(all 3 stand in center stage)

Ariel (center stage)- Hello I’m So-Hyun.  Actually I think spending a lot of time in the academy is too hard for children.  So if academies and schools were canceled I would do many things.  First of all, I would eat delicious food such as jajamyeong and I’ll make happy memories with my friends and family.  I want to go to a water park these days! I hope my wishes come true because if so I would be really happy!

Janette- Hello my name is Chae Yoon.  Since I have been a Prisoner of Education. POE, I had no chance to enjoy my childhood because of studying math, science, history, etc.  But if school was canceled today I would go to Everland with my friends and stay there all day long.  I would do everything I did in Everland when I was young like eating popcorn and ice cream, riding a roller coaster or the Viking ride.  If I go there, my stress will go away with the fun memories I would make. Then maybe I can study better the next day.

Joshua- Good evening.  I’m Shu-A.  Tonight, I’m going to talk about what I would do if my school was canceled for a day.  It’s quite simple.  I’ll destroy my school with dynamite, it will bring more than 1 day of free time. But don’t misunderstand my purpose, I want to destroy my school because it doesn’t teach me anything educational, and not because I hate education. It kills our eagerness in learning.  If I had a free day I would walk around the streets and enjoy my own time.

Closing MC rebirth- Jason- Good evening everyone, I’m Ji Seung.  A childhood is safely born.  It is born alright and lets wish that it does not suffer any harm, has no more attacks from school, studies, homework and has a happy life.  Now the celebration of having more free time to enjoy our childhoods is over for tonight.  Remember our campaign Empty Playgrounds, and it is our hope that we will make an impact and playgrounds will be full again.

 Class lines up and bows.
